The medicine is for the treatment of adults, adolescents and children aged 5 years and older with medullary thyroid cancer that cannot be removed surgically or has spread to other parts of the body.
It works by slowing the growth of new blood vessels in tumors (cancer). Thus, the flow of food and oxygen to the tumor stops. It can also act directly on cancer cells, killing them or slowing their growth.
contraindication
The drug should not be taken
if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to vandetanib or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
if you have a congenital heart disease called “congenital long QTc syndrome”. This condition will be displayed on the electrocardiogram (ECG).
if you are breastfeeding.
if you are taking any of the following medicines: medicines containing arsenic, cisapride (used to treat heartburn), intravenous erythromycin and moxifloxacin (used to treat infections), toremifene (used to treat breast cancer), mizolastine (used to treat allergies ), Class IA and III (for heart rate monitoring).
Do not take this medicine if any of the above apply to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor.
Dosage
Use in adults
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The recommended dose is 300 mg per day.
Use in children
The doctor will tell you how many tablets to give the child.
The dose you should give your child depends on the weight and height of your child.
The total daily dose in children should not exceed 300 mg. Treatment consists of a single dose to be given to the child once a day, every other day, or on a repeating 7-day schedule as directed by your doctor on the schedule. It is important that you use the therapy diary and give it to your doctor.
If you are experiencing any side effects
If you experience side effects, always talk to your doctor. Your doctor may advise you to take a smaller or larger dose of the drug (for example, two 100 mg tablets or one 100 mg tablet). Your doctor may also prescribe other medicines to help control your side effects. The side effects of the drug are listed in the “Side Effects” category.
If you take more than you should
If you take more vandetanib than the prescribed dose, tell your doctor right away or go to the nearest hospital.
If you forget to take a dose
What to do if you forget to take a pill depends on how much time is left until the next dose:
If the next dose is taken 12 hours later or later: Take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. Take the next tablet as usual.
If the next dose is due in less than 12 hours: Disregard the missed dose. Take the next tablet at the usual time.
Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for a missed dose.

Warnings and Precautions
If you are sensitive to sunlight, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
Some patients who take this supplement become more sensitive to sunlight. This can lead to sunburn. Protect yourself while you are taking this medicine by always using sunscreen outdoors and by wearing long clothing to avoid sun exposure.
Monitoring your blood and heart. Your doctor or nurse should measure the levels of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood and check your heart’s electrical activity with an electrocardiogram (ECG). These measurements should be taken on you as follows:
Before starting drug treatment
At regular intervals during treatment
1, 3 and 6 weeks after the start of treatment
12 weeks after starting treatment
Then at intervals of 3 months.

The drug should not be used in children under 5 years of age.
Ability to drive and use machines
Be careful when driving or using any tools or machinery. Please be aware that this medicine may make you tired, weak, or blurred vision.
