The preparation is a combination of two drugs that inhibit the metabolism of folic acid (water-soluble vitamin) in sensitive pathogens.It is used to treat infections (diseases caused by contagion) caused by pathogens sensitive to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and amenable to oral treatment:
- Infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract
- Pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis jiroveci (PCP)
- Infections of the ear, nose and throat area (except tonsillitis caused by streptococci)
- Infections of the kidneys and urinary tract (bladder, urethra), including short-term treatment and long-term preventive treatment against relapse
- Infections of the female and male genital organs including prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland) and granuloma venereum (chronic sexually transmitted disease) (syphilis, so-called hard chancre, is not recorded)
- Infections of the gastrointestinal tract:
- Shigellosis (bacterial dysentery), traveler’s diarrhea, chronic typhus
- In the case of the following infections, the medicine should only be used if other currently recommended antibiotics cannot be given: typhoid, paratyphoid A and B, salmonella diarrhea (salmonella enteritis) with septic disease (high fever after the bacteria enter the bloodstream) in immunocompromised patients.
- Brucellosis (infectious disease transmitted by pets)
- Nocardiosis (infectious disease that mainly affects immunocompromised patients)
- non-true mycotic mycetoma (tissue nodules caused by bacteria)
- South American blastomycosis (skin disease caused by fungi)

- A notice:
- Gastrointestinal inflammations caused by so-called enteritis salmonella should generally not be treated with this preparation because the course of the disease is not influenced and the duration of excretion is even prolonged (exception see above).
- The medicine is indicated for adults, adolescents and children aged 6 years and above.
