This medication is a combination of two drugs that inhibit the metabolism of folic acid (a water-soluble vitamin) in susceptible organisms.
The drug is used to treat infections (infectious diseases) caused by pathogens sensitive to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and amenable to oral treatment:
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
Pneumocystis jiroveci (PCP) pneumonia
Infections of the ear, nose and throat area (except tonsillitis caused by streptococci)
Infections of the kidneys and urinary tract (bladder, urethra), including short-term treatment and long-term preventive treatment against relapse of the disease.
Infections of the female and male genital organs, including prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland) and granuloma venereum (a chronic sexually transmitted disease) (syphilis, the so-called chancroid, is not recorded).
Gastrointestinal infections:
Shigellosis (bacterial dysentery), traveler’s diarrhea, typhoid fever.
The drug should only be used for the following infections if other currently recommended antibiotics cannot be prescribed: typhoid fever, paratyphoid fevers A and B, Salmonella diarrhea (Salmonella enteritis) with a septic disease process (high temperature after bacteria enter the bloodstream) in patients. with a weakened immune system.
Brucellosis (infectious disease transmitted by domestic animals)
Nocardiosis (an infectious disease that primarily affects immunocompromised patients)
false mycotic mycetoma (tissue nodules caused by bacteria)
South American blastomycosis (skin disease caused by fungi)
Notification:
Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by so-called Salmonella enteritis should not usually be treated with this drug, since it does not affect the course of the disease and even prolongs the duration of elimination (exception noted above).
The medicine is indicated for children under 12 years of age and infants from 6 weeks of age.
The medicine cannot be taken
if you are allergic to sulfonamide drugs, trimethoprim and related drugs (trimethoprim analogues, such as tetroxoprim), methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (European Ph.), propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (European Ph.), sulfite, or other ingredients of this medicine.
for erythema multiforme exudative, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis and drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (severe illness with redness and blistering of the skin), even if they have previously occurred
if you suffer from pathological changes in blood counts (low platelets or some white blood cells, some forms of anemia)
for some red blood cell diseases (congenital glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and hemoglobin abnormalities, such as Hb Cologne and Hb Zurich)
if you have kidney damage or severely reduced kidney function
if you have severe liver damage or impaired liver function (for example, acute liver inflammation).
if you suffer from acute porphyria (a disorder of the formation of red blood pigment).
if you suffer from bone marrow inflammation. This disease is usually caused by pathogens against which this drug is often not effective enough. Therefore, the medicine cannot be used for this disease.
