Cyproterone acetate is an antiandrogen. Inhibits the action of male sex hormones (androgens). It also reduces the amount of male sex hormones produced by the body.
Cyproterone acetate protects androgen-dependent organs of success, such as: B. prostate, against androgens coming from the gonads and (or) the adrenal cortex.
Cyproterone acetate is used for the palliative treatment of patients with secondary tumors or locally advanced inoperable prostate cancer.
If treatment with LHRH analogues (substances that reduce the production of sex hormones in the testicles) or surgery are inadequate, therapy that can be taken with medication (oral therapy) cannot be used, but is preferred.
at the beginning of treatment with LHRH agonists to prevent adverse effects and complications that may be caused by the initial increase in serum testosterone (male sex hormone) levels.
for the treatment of hot flashes that occur during treatment with LHRH agonists or after testicular removal.
Cyproterone acetate should not be taken:
if you are allergic to the active ingredient or any other ingredient of this medicine,
for liver diseases,
with Dubin-Johnson syndrome and Rotor syndrome (hereditary disorders of liver function in which the excretion of the erythrocyte pigment bilirubin is impaired),
in case of previous or existing liver tumors (only if they are not caused by secondary tumors of prostate cancer),
with known or suspected malignant diseases (except advanced prostate cancer),
if you have been diagnosed with meningioma (usually a benign tumor of the meninges). Ask your doctor if you are unsure.
for severe chronic depression,
if you have had previous or existing thromboembolic events (events that affect circulation by forming a clot in the blood vessel),
in adolescents before the end of puberty and in children, since an adverse effect on the developing functional chains of the endocrine system and (or) linear growth cannot be excluded.
Always take these medications exactly as your doctor told you. If you are unsure, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is:
For the palliative treatment of patients with secondary tumors or locally advanced inoperable prostate cancer:
One tablet of cyproterone acetate 100 mg 2-3 times a day.
The dose prescribed by the doctor should neither be reduced nor stopped after improvement or remission.
To prevent undesirable effects and complications that may be caused by an initial increase in the level of male sex hormones when starting treatment with LHRH agonists:
Initially, one tablet twice daily for 5-7 days, then one tablet twice daily for 3-4 weeks along with the LHRH agonist at the prescribed dosage.”
When treating with LHRH agonists, it is necessary to follow the information in the instructions for the drug used.
For the treatment of hot flashes in patients receiving LHRH analogues or after testicular tissue has been removed:
The recommended dose is one-half to one and a half tablets per day. If necessary, the dose can be increased to one tablet three times a day.
Additional information for special patient groups
Children and young people
Cyproterone acetate should not be used by male children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Cyproterone acetate can only be used after puberty has passed. Until the end of puberty, the harmful effect of cyproterone acetate on body size (length growth) cannot be completely excluded.
Elderly patients (65 years and older)
Studies of the absorption, distribution, degradation and excretion of cyproterone acetate in elderly patients have not been conducted.
Patients with liver dysfunction
Do not take cyproterone acetate if you have liver disease.
Patients with impaired renal function
Studies of the absorption, distribution, degradation and excretion of cyproterone acetate in patients with impaired renal function have not been conducted.
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you feel that the effect of cyproterone acetate is too strong or too weak.
If you take more than you should:
There is no evidence of serious adverse health effects following an overdose of cyproterone acetate.
If you forget to take:
If you forget to take your pills on time, you should still continue therapy as prescribed, skipping the forgotten pills. You should not take a double dose to make up for missed tablets.
If you stop taking:
The initial symptoms for which the doctor prescribed cyproterone acetate may recur. If you intend to interrupt or stop treatment with cyproterone acetate early, discuss this with your doctor.
If you have any further questions about using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
