The medicine contains oestrogen, a natural sex hormone found in the body, and belongs to a group of drugs called hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It replaces lost oestrogen and so reduces discomfort.
During menopause, the amount of oestrogen produced by a woman’s body decreases. This can cause symptoms such as heat in the face, throat and chest (‘hot flashes’). The medicine relieves these symptoms after menopause. It will only be prescribed to you if your symptoms are seriously interfering with your daily life. There is limited experience in treating women over 65.
