indication
The drug is a medicine containing the thyroid hormone levothyroxine as an active ingredient. This has the same effect as the natural hormone.
You will receive this medicine to replace the missing thyroid hormone and/or to relieve stress on the thyroid gland.
The drug is used
to replace (replace) the missing hormone in any form of hypothyroidism,
to prevent the recurrence of goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland) after surgery to remove the goiter with normal thyroid function,
for the treatment of benign goiter (benign goiter) with normal thyroid function,
for concomitant therapy of an overactive thyroid gland, which is treated with antithyroid drugs (drugs that suppress overactive thyroid gland), after achieving a normal metabolic status,
with malignant tumors of the thyroid gland, especially after surgery, to suppress the resumption of tumor growth and replenish the missing thyroid hormone.
contraindication
The drug should not be taken
if you are allergic to levothyroxine sodium or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
if you have any of the following diseases or conditions:
untreated hyperthyroidism,
untreated adrenal insufficiency,
untreated weakness of the pituitary gland (pituitary insufficiency), if this leads to adrenal insufficiency requiring treatment,
recent heart attack
acute inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis),
acute inflammation of all layers of the wall of the heart (pancarditis).
If you are pregnant, you should not take a drug and a drug that suppresses an overactive thyroid gland (called an antithyroid drug) at the same time.
Before starting drug therapy, the following diseases or conditions must be excluded or treated:

Tablets with different levels of the active ingredient (25-200 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium) are available for individual treatment, so you usually only need to take one tablet a day.
Depending on the clinical picture, the doctor will be guided by the following recommendations:
For the treatment of hypothyroidism, adults initially take 25 to 50 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium per day. This dose can be increased by 25 to 50 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium every two to four weeks to a daily dose of 100 to 200 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium as directed by a physician.
Levothyroxine sodium 75-200 mcg is taken daily to prevent recurrence of goiter after goiter removal and to treat benign goiter.
Levothyroxine sodium 50–100 micrograms is taken daily as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of hyperthyroidism with antithyroid drugs.
After surgery on the thyroid gland for a malignant tumor of the thyroid gland, the daily dose is 150-300 mcg of levothyroxine sodium.
If needed, a lower dose of thyroid hormone may be sufficient.

With long-term treatment of congenital and acquired hypothyroidism, the daily dose is usually 100-150 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium per m 2 of body surface area.
In newborns and children with congenital hypothyroidism, rapid hormone replacement therapy is especially important to achieve normal mental and physical development. With this form of hypothyroidism in the first 3 months of treatment, a daily dose of levothyroxine sodium 10-15 mcg per kilogram of body weight is recommended. The attending physician will then individually adjust the required dose based on the results of the examinations (especially the level of thyroid hormones in the blood).
In children with acquired hypothyroidism, an initial dose of 12.5-50 micrograms of levothyroxine sodium per day is recommended. Elderly patients, patients with ischemic heart disease, patients with hypothyroidism
In elderly patients, in patients with ischemic heart disease, and in patients with severe or long-term hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone treatment is started with extreme caution (low initial dose, then increased slowly and at longer intervals with frequent thyroid hormone checks). .
Patients with low body weight and patients with large goiter
Experience has shown that lower doses are also sufficient for patients with low body weight and for patients with large goiters.

In the case of hypothyroidism and thyroid surgery for malignant tumors of the thyroid gland, the drug is usually taken for life, with benign goiter and to prevent the resumption of goiter growth for several months or years of life. With concomitant therapy for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, the drug is taken simultaneously with antithyroid drugs (drugs that inhibit hyperthyroidism). For the treatment of benign goiter with normal thyroid function, a treatment period of 6 months to 2 years is required. If during this time treatment with the drug has not brought the desired result, the doctor will consider other treatment options.
