As a result, the cell wall can no longer offer the bacteria stability and protection, it bursts and cell components escape, the bacteria are destroyed. Since this effect only occurs in bacteria whose cell wall is currently being built or remodeled, the active ingredient can only attack bacteria that are in a growth or reproduction phase. For this reason, it takes a considerable amount of time for all of the bacteria in a colony to die completely.
