Description
Hyperinsulism is a disease caused by impaired insulin production. When too much of it is produced, the body begins to lack glucose, and the brain does not receive enough nutrients. Due to the lack of oxygen that the brain experiences, the functioning of the nervous system is disrupted, a person becomes lethargic, and seizures sometimes occur.
Proglycem (active ingredient – Diazoxide) is one of the drugs that are used for the conservative treatment of such conditions. It slows down too active insulin production. While taking this drug, the volume of immunoreactive insulin decreases quite quickly.
Application. Typically, the daily dose of the drug is 100-600 mg (depending on the patient’s weight) and is divided into several doses. The drug is taken under the supervision of the attending physician, who monitors the patient’s condition and can adjust the dose if side effects occur. However, according to reviews, it is usually well tolerated and can be taken for years as maintenance therapy. The only thing to consider: Proglycem (Diazoxide) tends to retain fluid in the body, so diuretics are often prescribed along with its intake.
Compound
Active substance: Diazoxide 25 mg.
Excipients: lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, gelatin.
Pharmacological effect
Proglycem modifies blood sugar levels and effectively stops excessive insulin production, lowering blood pressure by widening the passages in the blood vessels. When, due to a disease, insulin is produced in large quantities, a person lacks glucose, the brain does not receive enough oxygen, and with it nutrients – this leads to lethargy and seizures.
Proglycem is recommended in the treatment of abnormally low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) of various origins:
hypoglycemia due to hypersensitivity to leucine,
prolonged childhood hypoglycemia due to increased secretion of pancreatic hormone (insulin),
secretion of insulin by malignant/benign pancreatic tumors,
other tumors causing hypoglycemia,
hypoglycemia of unknown origin.
Indications
Hyperuricemia due to gout and gouty arthritis,
hypoglycemia due to hyperinsulinism,
tumor diseases of the endocrine pancreas,
extrapancreatic tumors,
idiopathic familial hypoglycemia,
hyperplasia of the islets of Langerhans,
nesidioblastosis,
preoperative preparation and postoperative therapy as a preventive hypoglycemic agent.
Contraindications
Patients who have had myocardial infarction
For heart failure,
For idiopathic postprandial hypoglycemia,
When breastfeeding,
If you are intolerant to Diazoxide or other components of the drug.
