Spironolactone belongs to a specific group of drugs called aldosterone antagonists, which inhibit the action of the hormone aldosterone. One of the functions of aldosterone is to ensure the retention of sodium in the body. The hormone is part of the system that regulates the fluid/salt balance in the body (“RAAS”, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system). Spironolactone increases urine excretion in patients suffering from fluid retention in the tissues (edema) or in the abdominal cavity (ascites) by increasing the sodium (salt) content in the urine. The loss of potassium as a possible consequence of the use of certain diuretics is reduced. The antihypertensive effect is caused by the excretion of water and salt.
