Indication:
- The drug is an immunosuppressant. After an organ transplant (such as a liver, kidney, or heart), your immune system tries to reject the new organ. It is designed to keep your immune system in check and allow your body to accept the transplanted organ.
- The medicine is often used in combination with other medicines that also suppress the immune system.
- You may also be prescribed a product to treat rejection of a liver, kidney, or heart transplant or other organ transplant because your body’s immune response was not controlled by previous therapy.
Dosage:
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Make sure you always get the same tacrolimus medicine when you fill your prescription, unless your specialist has agreed to change the tacrolimus medicine. This medicine should be taken twice a day. If you are given a medicine that looks different than what you are used to, or the dosing instructions have changed, talk to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible to make sure you are given the right medicine.
- The starting dose to prevent transplant rejection will be calculated by your doctor based on your body weight. Initial doses immediately after transplantation are usually in the range of 0.075-0.3 mg/kg body weight/day depending on the organ being transplanted.
- The dosage of the drug depends on your general condition and the type of other immunosuppressants you are taking at the same time. To help your doctor determine the correct dose and adjust it from time to time, he or she must have regular blood tests. Once your condition has stabilized, your doctor will usually reduce your tacrolimus dosage. Your doctor will tell you exactly how many capsules you need to swallow and how often you need to take the product.
- The medicine should be taken twice a day, usually in the morning and evening.
