Lung cancer treatment drug Xalkori (crizotinib) 200 mg, 250 mg Xalkori
Lung cancer – one of the most severe consequences of such a bad habit as smoking. At the same time, 80% of patients are diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). For many years they tried to defeat this disease with the help of chemotherapy. Such aggressive treatment greatly worsened the quality of life of patients. In 2011, it was revealed that the substance crizotinib can effectively fight NSCLC.
Crizotinib can also be purchased in Russia. In 2012, Pfizer registered the drug Xalkori as an anticancer drug. Its action is based on the fact that the active substance of the drug crizotinib prevents the proliferation of blood vessels supplying the tumor. Because of this, the tumor becomes less dangerous to human life. The price of crizotinib is quite high, but the effectiveness of the drug is high.
Studies conducted by the company have shown that survival rates among patients taking the drug are increasing compared to those treated with radiation. Moreover, no unexpected side effects were recorded during the tests.
Difficulties in diagnosing and treating NSCLC
Unfortunately, diagnosis of lung cancer rarely occurs in the early stages, although it is at this point that it is easier to cure. The first symptoms, which should alert everyone, are often attributed to a lingering cold. These include:
- persistent cough;
- shortness of breath;
- exhausted sputum contains streaks of blood;
- hoarse voice;
- pain in the lung area.
As a rule, NSCLC is detected at stage 2 or 3. And even in these cases, Xalkori is an effective drug.
It has been observed that most patients with NSCLC have the ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) gene. People with this gene are thought to be prone to developing lung adenocarcinoma, even if they do not smoke. The tumor begins to grow the moment the ALK gene is affected.
The drug crizotinib blocks (aka inhibits) this altered gene and helps reduce the size of the tumor.
Unfortunately, not everyone can take critonizib. Oncologists do not recommend taking it:
- pregnant women and nursing mothers;
- children under 18 years of age;
- patients with impaired liver and kidney function.
