Terbinafin Heumann 250mg Tabletten 42 Stk.(Terbinafin)

The tablets contain terbinafine as the active ingredient. Terbinafine belongs to a group of active substances used against fungal infections (antimycotics). The tablets are prescribed orally (by mouth).
The medicine is used for:
Fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails. For some mixed nail infections caused by yeast, attempting treatment is indicated;
Severe fungal infections of the feet (tinea pedis) and body (tinea pedis and herpes zoster) that do not respond to adequate external treatment.
Hints
Unlike terbinafine applied topically, terbinafine tablets are not effective against yeast infections (candidiasis, tinea versicolor [also known as pityriasis versicolor]) of the skin.
To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may take appropriate skin or nail samples for laboratory testing before starting treatment with terbinafine tablets.
The medicine cannot be taken
if you are allergic to terbinafine or any other ingredient;
if you suffer or have previously suffered from chronic or acute liver disease;
if you suffer from kidney disease;
if fungal nail disease is the result of an infection caused primarily by bacteria.
If any of these apply to you, tell your doctor before taking the product.
If you suspect you may have an allergic reaction, seek the advice of your doctor.
Always take your medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are unsure, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is 1 tablet per day.
Use in children
Since experience in children is limited, use is not recommended.
Treatment of elderly patients
There is no evidence that older patients require different dosages or experience side effects not observed in younger patients. From the age of 65 you can take tablets in the same dosage as younger people.
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you think the effect is too strong or too weak.
Duration of use
The dosage and duration of treatment are determined individually by the doctor. The following recommendations apply to the following diseases:
Nail infection
The duration of treatment is usually 3 months.
If only the nails are affected, a shorter treatment period of 6 weeks may be sufficient. When treating toenail infections, especially those affecting the big toenail, longer durations of therapy (>/= 6 months) are indicated in some cases. Low nail growth (less than 1 mm/month) during the first 12 weeks of treatment is a sign of the need for longer therapy.
In the case of mixed yeast-fungal infections, treatment should be continued only if therapy provides a response in the first 2–3 weeks (resumption of healthy nail growth).
Fungal infection of the skin of the feet, entire body and legs.
The average duration of treatment is 4 – 6 weeks.
If you took more than you should
Contact your doctor or hospital immediately for advice. Medical treatment may be required. The same thing happens if someone else takes your medicine by mistake. Your doctor may first prescribe activated charcoal to remove the active ingredient and take further measures if necessary.
In case of overdose, the following signs are observed:
Headache, nausea, upper abdominal pain and dizziness.
If you forget to take it
Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose.
Take the tablet as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is less than 4 hours away, wait and take your next tablet at your usual time.
If you stop taking it
To cure a fungal infection, treatment over a longer period of time is necessary. Complete resolution of signs and symptoms of the disease may not become apparent until several months after treatment, as healthy nails take time to grow. The response to therapy can be judged by the growth of healthy nails. Normally, fingernails grow about 2 mm per month, and toenails grow about 1 mm per month. The diseased area gradually heals. Irregular use or premature cessation of treatment creates a risk of re-infection. Therefore, always contact your doctor in advance if you want to stop treatment.
